About Laxminarayan Temple:

Birla Mandir or Laxminarayan Temple is a hindu temple dedicated to Laxminarayan in Delhi, India. Built by the industrialst Sh. Baldeo Das Birla & his son Jugal Kishore Birlabetween 1933 - 1939, this beautiful temple is located in the west of Connaught Place and has been dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The Hsitory behind the temple is the temple was built over a period of 6 years and got inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi with the condition that entry to Laxmi Narain Temple for people of all castes, especially untouchables should be allowed.The famous Birla family takes acre of the maintenance of the temple site .This is the first of a series of temples built by the Birlas in many cities of India, which are also often called Birla Temple. It was the first large Hindu temple built in Delhi. The three-storied temple is built in the northern or Nagara style of temple architecture. The entire temple is adorned with carvings depicting the scenes from golden yuga of the present universe cycle.

More than hundred skilled artisans from Benares, headed by Acharya Vishvanath Shastri, carved the icons of the temple. The highest shikhara of the temple above the sanctum sanctorum is about 160 feet high.The temple is spread over 7.5 acres, adorned with many shrines, fountains, and a large garden and also houses Geeta Bhawan for discourses. The temple is designed in the Orissan style, with tall curved towers capped by large amalakas (circular ribbed motif at the summit of a temple tower). The exterior is faced with the white marble and red sandstone typical of Delhi's Mughal architecture. The interior court is with the two­ storey verandahs on three sides; there are gardens and fountains at the rear. The profusion of sculptures, idols, spires and jalis, the Birla Mandir in Delhi is also considered as a splendor in terms of its architecture.The temple is one of the major attractions of Delhi and attracts thousands of devotees on the festivals of Janmashtami and Diwali. The festivals are celebrated here with much goodwill and cheer.
