Shrinathji Temple

Dedicated to Shrinathji in Nathdwara, Shrinathji temple is an important Hindu temple and pilgrimage center by Vaishnavas.

History & Significance of the Temple: -

The Swarup or divine form of Shrinathji is said to be self-manifested. Because of some social and economic miserable condition and to protect the idol from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century, the idol of Lord Krishna was moved to Nathdwara (Rajasthan) from Govardhan. When the idol reached Sihad or Sinhad, the chariot carrying the Lord got stuck in the mud and could not be moved further. The priests realized that this place was the Lord's chosen spot and hence, a temple was built there under the rule of Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar. Shrinathji Temple is also known as 'Haveli of Shrinathji’.

Thus, a temple was built at this spot and the holy township of Nathdwara grew around the temple. In 1672 Lord Shrinathji was placed in a new Temple built in village Sihad, now called Nathdwara, on the banks of river Banas.

The Image of Shrinathji

Shrinathji symbolizes a form of Krishna, when he lifted the Govardhan hill, with one arm raised. The image in the form of a single black marble, where the lord is revealed with his left hand raised and the right hand made into a fist resting at the waist, with a large diamond placed beneath the lips.

Legend of Shrinathji Temple

As per the scriptures of Pushtimarg - Shrinahtji used to come to Mewar to play Chaupar with his beloved princess Ajab Kunwari.  But at the time of his departure to Vrindavan, she went in deep sorrow. So, the Lord promised her that one day, he would reside here permanently when the time and situation is right. The story of the cart getting stuck in the mud at this place is considered to be the Lord's way of making sure that his promise is kept.
