History & Legend
Sage Narada visited the celestial court of Shiva at Mount Kailash to present to him a fruit, the gyana-palam (can also be termed as the fruit of knowledge). He said to Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikaya that whoever first circled the world thrice will be awarded with the fruit. Both of them accepted the challenge. Karthikeya started his journey around the globe on his mount peacock. Ganesha, who summarised that his parents are his world, circumambulated them and won the fruit. Karthikeya was angry and later chose to remain as a hermit to Palani. The idol of the Muruga in Palani was created and consecrated by sage Bogar, one of Hinduism's eighteen great Siddhas, out of an amalgam of nine poisons or Navapashanam. (The icon made by Siddha Bhogar by combining nine poisonous substances).
The deity at the sanctum sanctorum is made out of an amalgam of nine minerals popularly called Navapashanam. Some people say it is a combination of medicinal herbs. It consists of the following items: Veeram, Pooram, Rasam, Jathilingam, Kandagam, Gauri Pasanam, Vellai Pasanam, Mridharsingh, Silasat.
