Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu god Guruvayurappan (a four-armed affiliation of the Hindus god Vishnu). It is located in the town of Guruvayur in Kerala, India. Being one of the most important places of worship for Hindus of Kerala, this place is referred to as BhulokaVaikunta i.e. "Holy Abode of Vishnu on Earth".

Guruvayoor is a thriving township in Trichur district of Kerala state in the South of India, its scenic beauty and serenity are breath taking. Guruvayoorappan is the chief diety here - The God which hears the prayers of its pilgrims.

The presiding deity of the Guruvayur Temple is Vishnu, worshipped in the form of Guruvayurappan. The central icon is a four-armed standing Krishna carrying the conch Panchajanya, the discus Sudarshana Chakra, the mace Kaumodaki and a lotus with a Holy basil garland. This image represents the majestic form of Vishnu as revealed to Krishna's parents Vasudeva and Devaki around the time of Krishna's birth; hence Guruvayur is also known as "Dwarka of South India". He is currently worshipped according to routines laid down by AdiShankara.

Visiting Hours:

The temple opens at 3:00 am, closed between 1:30 pm and again reopens at 4:30pm.

Dress code for the temple:

 

Mandatory dress code are applicable for people who wish to enter the Guruvayur Temple. Men wear mundu around their waist, without any dress covering their chest. But it is allowed to cover the chest region with a small piece of cloth (veshthi). Women wear sari, shalwarkameez and girls wear long skirt and blouses.

 

How to Reach:

 

  • By Road: Guruvayoor is well connected with the other parts of the country by road and rail. The National highway is passing through Kunnamkulam which is just 8 kms away from Guruvayoor. Kerala Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private bus services are available from all major locations of the state and few inter-state services.
  • By rail: The railway station towards the east of the temple is connected to the Madras-Mangalore main line at Thrissur. It has got computerized ticket booking facility and tickets can be booked to any locations from here.
  • By Air: Kochi international airport (Nedumbassery) 80 kms from Guruvayoor is the nearest airport here. All major international flight services are operated from these airports.

MAMMIYUR SIVA TEMPLE: This temple is situated 1km north of Guruvayoor temple. There is a common belief that one who visits Guruvayoor temple should also visit Mammiyur to complete his pilgrimage. It has prathishtas of Siva in Linga form and Parvathi in the form of bronze mirror image. Rudrabhishekam is the main offering.

 

THRISSUR VADAKKUNNATHAN TEMPLE: SreeVadakkunnathan(Siva) Temple is one of the most ancient graama - kshetras of Kerala with exquisite wood carvings and mural paintings. बैद्यनाथ धाम ज्योतिर्लिंग :

भगवान शिव के पूजा में बेलपत्र चढ़ाना सर्वश्रेठ और शुभ माना गया है। तीन पत्तियों का संगम, शिव की तीन आंखों के अलावा उनके त्रिशूल का भी प्रतीक है, जो पिछले तीन जन्मों के पापों को नष्ट करने के वाला माना जाता है। हालाँकि, वृक्ष के बेलपत्र तोड़ने का भी एक समय होता हैं। कहा जाता हैं कि महादेव सौ कमल चढ़ाने से जितने प्रसन्न होते हैं, उतना ही एक नीलकमल चढ़ाने पर होते हैं और एक हजार नीलकमल के बराबर एक बेलपत्र होता है। इसीलिए भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए बेलपत्र चढ़ाना चाहिए।

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple, also known as Baba Baidyanath dham and Baidyanath dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred abodes of Shiva. It is located in Deoghar in the Santhal Parganas division of the state of Jharkhand, India. It is a temple complex consisting of the main temple of Baba Baidyanath, where the Jyotirlinga is installed, and 21 other temples.

About the Puja:

Offering Bilva or belpatra in Shiva Puja is important and considered auspicious. A confluence of three leaves, "Bilva" is symbolic of Shiva's three eyes as well as his trident (trishul) which is believed to destroy sins of the past three births. However, there are certain days when one should not pluck the bel leaves from a tree.
