DAKSHINESHWARI KALI TEMPLE, KOLKATA

Dakshineswar Kali temple is a well-known Hindu temple in India. It is situated at Dakshineswar near Kolkata. The goddess of this temple is Bhavatarani, a feature of the goddess Kali who is defined as "She who liberates her devotees from the ocean of existence".It is prominent for its association with the great religious philosopher Ramakrishna Paramahamsa who devote thirty years in spiritual ecstasy and preached the unity of all religions. He used to serve as the head priest here.Queen Rashmoni built this Indian temple in 1855. She was a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali. Kali Devi appeared in the dreams of Rani Rashmoni and instructed her to construct a beautiful temple on the banks of the Hoogly River and install her idol in it. She also said that she would manifest herself in the image over there. It is one of the largest temples in Kolkata.

Timings

Mandir opened from October to March: 6:00 a.m to 12.30 p.m and 3:00 p.m to 8:30 pm and from April to September: 6 a.m to 12.30 p.m and 3:30 p.m to 9:00 pm. Entry is Free. Photography within the temple compound is prohibited. Shoes are not allowed in the temple.

HOW TO REACH

By Road -

It is connected to Kolkata. One has to travel along Barrackpore Trunk Road, a major artery in north Kolkata, and turn left for Dakshineswar just after Baranagore and before Dunlop rail over bridge.  A new bridge named 'NiveditaSetu' has been built to ease out the load of old bridge, 'VivekanadaSetu'. There are many buses from Kolkata, as well from places across the river.

 

By Train -

Dakshineswar is railway station on the Sealdah (in the heart of Kolkata)-Dankuni (on the Howrah-Bardhaman chord line) sector. It is 14 km from Sealdah and 10 km from Dankuni. Most local trains specialyDankuni Local from Sealdah station stop here and some long distance trains such as Darjeeling mail also stop at this station.

By Air

It takes around 30 mins from cab or taxi to reach Dakshineswar Temple. The nearest Netaji Subhash Chandra Boss’ airport is 12kms away from Dakshineswar Temple.

See the idols of Lord Krishna and Radha. Look inside one of the side rooms to see the temple’s original statue of Lord Krishna. The idol was dropped by a priest, but it has been repaired so well that it’s difficult to see the cracks.Tour the 12 identical temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Six temples are located on either side of the bathing ghat, the stone staircase that leads into the river. View the various representations of the god inside these shrines.Explore Ramakrishna’s room, near the last of the Shiva temples. This small space is dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, a 19th-century mystic who was a priest here. See Paramhansa’s two cots, the one he slept in and the one he sat on to talk to devotees.Stop by the old fig tree that is the last remaining tree of the temple’s original panchabati. A panchavati is a garden of five trees where spiritual practices are observed.

बैद्यनाथ धाम ज्योतिर्लिंग :

बैद्यनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर को ही बाबा बैद्यनाथ धाम भी कहा जाता है।इस जगह को शिव के सबसे पवित्र निवास स्थान और 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक माना जाता है। यह भारत के झारखंड राज्य के देवघर में स्थित है। इस मंदिर परिसर है बाबा बैद्यनाथ का ज्योतिर्लिंग स्थापित है।मंदिर परिसर में बैद्यनाथ धाम ज्योतिर्लिंग के अलावा 21 अन्य मंदिर भी हैं।

पूजा का महत्त्व:

भगवान शिव के पूजा में बेलपत्र चढ़ाना सर्वश्रेठ और शुभ माना गया है। तीन पत्तियों का संगम, शिव की तीन आंखों के अलावा उनके त्रिशूल का भी प्रतीक है, जो पिछले तीन जन्मों के पापों को नष्ट करने के वाला माना जाता है। हालाँकि, वृक्ष के बेलपत्र तोड़ने का भी एक समय होता हैं। कहा जाता हैं कि महादेव सौ कमल चढ़ाने से जितने प्रसन्न होते हैं, उतना ही एक नीलकमल चढ़ाने पर होते हैं और एक हजार नीलकमल के बराबर एक बेलपत्र होता है। इसीलिए भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए बेलपत्र चढ़ाना चाहिए।

About the Temple :

Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple, also known as Baba Baidyanath dham and Baidyanath dham is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred abodes of Shiva. It is located in Deoghar in the Santhal Parganas division of the state of Jharkhand, India. It is a temple complex consisting of the main temple of Baba Baidyanath, where the Jyotirlinga is installed, and 21 other temples.

About the Puja:

Offering Bilva or belpatra in Shiva Puja is important and considered auspicious. A confluence of three leaves, "Bilva" is symbolic of Shiva's three eyes as well as his trident (trishul) which is believed to destroy sins of the past three births. However, there are certain days when one should not pluck the bel leaves from a tree.
